Are You Stuck in “On” Mode? How to Recognise It and What to Do Next

You know that energized feeling when stress (let’s call that activation energy) fuels your focus and performance?

But what happens when you stay in that “on” state too long, and your body can’t find the off switch?

Being stuck in “on” mode means your nervous system stays activated past what’s helpful. This chronic activation can lead to:

  • Difficulty concentrating or racing thoughts
  • Feeling overwhelmed or wired but tired
  • Physical tension, headaches, or rapid heartbeat
  • Trouble sleeping or constantly feeling “on edge”

Staying stuck in a state of constant activation doesn’t just change how you work, it changes how you feel. Recognising the signs early gives you the chance to reset, so you can protect your performance and your quality of life.

What to Do About It

1. Pause and Check In

Take a moment to notice your body and breath. Are you holding tension? Are you holding your breath? Is your breath shallow or rapid? Awareness is the first step.

2. Use Simple Reset Tools

Try a slow, controlled breath, inhaling through your nose for 4 seconds and exhaling through your mouth for 6. Even one cycle sends a safety signal to your nervous system.

3. Change Your Posture

Sit or stand tall, soften your shoulders, relax your hands and lift your gaze slightly. This helps your brain interpret safety.

4. Schedule Micro-Breaks

Short pauses during your day to reset help your nervous system, moving back toward balance and preventing burnout.

Why It Matters

Moving in and out of activation states isn’t just about comfort, it’s how you build resilience, sustain focus, and optimise energy over the long haul.
